Where to look
Look beneath loose cushions, underneath the furniture and in the retailer’s documents. Photograph the entire label, including any model number. If it is missing, contact the manufacturer. Similar-looking fabric online is not a reliable substitute for the exact product information.
W, S, W-S and X
These letter codes appear on some international furniture brands: W indicates water-based products, S solvent-based products, W-S either as instructed, and X vacuuming or brushing. The manufacturer’s exact instructions control. For example, La-Z-Boy’s W guidance does not give blanket approval for hot-water extraction.
A zip does not mean washable
A cover may have a zip for assembly. Its washing label, possible dimensional changes and construction still need checking. A cover removed and washed incorrectly may no longer fit. Do not remove it solely because a zip is present.
What to include with an enquiry
Send the label, a full photograph and a close-up of the affected area together. Add the age, model and products used if known. When care instructions rule out a treatment, another approach or declining the job is better than a risky attempt.
